As previously announced here, each day I will be posting a film to get you in the Christmas spirit. Each film is picked strategically based on what I believe will excite you closer and closer to the big day.
DAY 14: CHRISTMAS WITH THE KRANKS (2004)
Ugh, the nostalgia is just going to continue hitting.
This 2000’s classic got ripped apart by critics upon its release. In fact, it holds a 5% on Rotten Tomatoes right now… Ouch. Despite its poor message, it is still fun and exciting to watch.
Jamie Lee Curtis and Tim Allen play the Kranks, a couple that decides to skip Christmas after evaluating how much they spend each year. The neighborhood disagrees with their choice and henceforth hilarity ensues.
Critics are right, it holds a very ill-mannered message: to conform under pressure. The Kranks want to do their own thing and be themselves, but fail to and crash after the neighborhood and their daughter convince them to continue celebrating Christmas. Certain scenarios like co-workers being mad they won’t be getting gifts, the neighbors being mad they won’t get a party, and charities being mad they won’t receive a donation just completely shows the greed of the holiday. It promotes consumerism rather than doing the opposite. However, I like to watch it to remind me to never feel this way and just be happy to have a family or friends – or f*ck it, myself – to celebrate this wonderful time of year.
I do appreciate the performances by Curtis and Allen, the slapstick comedy throughout, and just the holiday vibes overall.
Consider my message above that to be with loved ones and give love this Holiday season is so much more important than buying gifts. Tell your best friend you love them and your grateful for all they do, your parents, your siblings, your teachers, your boss, anyone. Spread love this Holiday.
