31 Days of Terror, Day 24: “A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors”

As previously announced here, each day I will be posting a film to get you in the Halloween spirit. Each film is picked strategically based on what will excite you closer and closer to the big day.

I wanted to include this film on last years list, even to the point of including it on my honourable mentions post, so the idea of including a camp and horror origins theme on this years list I couldn’t resist the opportunity.

A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987) is the turning point in the “Elm Street” franchise that pits the patients of a teen mental facility against the dream master himself, Freddy Krueger. With the help of “Elm Street’s” original scream queen, Nancy Thompson (with Heather Langenkamp returning), they take control of their dreams to beat Freddy.

Dream Warriors sees a shift in the franchise which takes Freddy Krueger out of the element of “scary” and makes him more “funny” to standout amongst the other leading serial killer franchises in the 80s. Gone are the menacing shadows down alleyways, and in are the quirky oneliners and elaborate kills that one could only dream of.

On the surface, the “Elm Street” franchise is cheesy, but Dream Warriors is a standout entry as you sympathize with the victims and enjoy the originality of the concept before New Line Cinema drilled it into the ground. With quality spooks and Mr. Krueger at his prime, Dream Warriors is a big film in the horror genre just as much as the original film is.
