I can’t believe it has taken me this long to choose to add an American adaptation of Japanese horror to the list. In the early 2000s, the U.S. found some of its most popular horror films were remakes of Japanese-Horror films (Commonly referred to as J-Horror) like The Grudge (2004), Pulse (2006) and One Missed Call (2008), but the most popular to date is The Ring (2002).

The film focuses on a woman and her son who come across a videotape that threatens to kill the viewer 7 days after seeing it. The tape sends Rachel on a hunt to stop the clock of her pending death.

Following a drought in the horror genre, the box office needed something genuinely scary again to get viewers into the seats. The Ring was finally a film to curve away from the trend of slasher films following Scream (1996) and feature an intriguing slow-burn fright that features an engaging story with solid scares. Ring has some terrifying imagery from the cold open to the video tape itself, and the build up to the mystery of the tape is a solid pay off in the end.

I am more than excited to add The Ring to this years list and is actually one of my favourite entries I have added, I hope you enjoy it too!
